Northstar Access believes in supporting women in construction, and especially in the scaffolding industry.  We are lucky to have quite a few very talent women on our teams across Canada.

Women are no strangers to the construction and building industries, yet it’s not often you hear about women who work in scaffolding. However, more and more female professionals are breaking into this historically male-dominated field – both on and off the job site – demonstrating their abilities as skilled professionals who can handle any assignment. In light of International Women’s Day and Women in Construction Week, we wanted to highlight some amazing female scaffolders and team members we have here at Northstar. These women are doing incredible work while overcoming gender roles in a still somewhat biased industry.

Women have been making inroads in the construction industry for years, but they still face many challenges. One of the biggest challenges is simply getting hired. Despite considerable progress, women are still largely underrepresented in construction. According to PROCORE in Canada, women made up only 13% of the total workforce in construction in 2019, with only 4.7% of tradespeople working in construction were females.

The lack of diversity can be traced back to a number of factors, including a historical preference for hiring white males, a lack of awareness about the benefits of diversity, and even outright discrimination. Thankfully, there are organizations working to change the industry for the better. One such organization is Women in Construction (WIC), which promotes the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women in the construction industry. WIC offers training and networking opportunities for women looking to enter or advance their career in construction. With more women entering the field, it’s only a matter of time before the construction industry becomes more diverse and inclusive.

At Northstar are proud to share that we do not shy away from hiring women! In fact, we know that we have a higher percentage of women on our team than most of our competitors, and we believe this is a big contributor to our success!
