Covid-19 Impacts on Construction Industry

Since the COVID-19 pandemic arose, the construction industry took a deep impact. Creating a shock wave that reverberated across seemingly all actions in construction life. This shock wave called COVID-19 impacts the construction industry, like never before. How we shop, how we work, and how we create have all felt the effects. Physical distancing, masking up and health & safety protocols are on the up rise in Spring 2021. Creating challenging hurdles for companies and employees to overcome while slowing down projects and shutting down many others due to virus outbreaks throughout the industry.

A renewed focus on worksite safety brought about by the pandemic may have a lasting impact on the construction industry. Such as measures to keep job-site covid safe.

Job-site Safety Redefined

Though COVID-19 isn’t a common work-related construction hazard, we know that it has shown a spotlight on the importance of workplace safety. In the construction industry, many employers like Northstar Access have already implemented new practices for containing coronavirus and keeping workers healthy, including:

  • Enhanced PPE protocols such as mask, eyeglasses, and face shield wearing
  • Staggered start times and shift work
  • Temperature checks for workers at the start of each day
  • Controlled access to worksites and increased security/perimeter control
  • Comprehensive disinfection policies for tools, machinery, and work surfaces
  • Increased access to hand washing and sanitizing rub
  • Social distancing policies, including carpool bans.
  • New delivery processing methods.
  • Production/supply chain modifications that utilize pre-fabricated materials when possible.

Covid-19 Impacts on Construction Industry-led changes which are focused on creating safer, cleaner, and less crowded construction sites. And this would require a committed effort from both employers and workers. We are more to hear on provincial and federal regulators that may soon adopt more solidified coronavirus-focused safety standards. Medical experts say, ‘Employers implementing coronavirus-focused safety policies today, will be prepared for the expected waves of outbreaks‘.
