The winter season can get very dangerous for any worker who has to deal with the cold, the ice, and the discomforts that come with working outside. These daily work blocks create problems that must be dealt with for the safety and comfort of the workers. To keep everyone safe and warm let’s follow these simple yet effective steps:

winter construction

Clothing: The right attire is key

Hat, gloves, non-slip boots, jacket, and multiple layers are important key items. Frostbite is most common on the fingers, toes, nose, ears, cheeks, and chin Check the weather forecast in advance but be ready for any weather changes, this is Canada!

Workplace Inspections: Prevent the dangers

Every day you should start with a thorough jobsite inspection to identify any potential winter weather hazards before work begins. Clear snow and ice from all commonly used areas and continuously make rounds to avoid build up – Add this to your daily JSA.

Timing is Everything: Work with Caution

Never sacrifice safety for speed. During rough weather conditions, workers who rush are at the highest risk of getting injured or causing an accident.

Company Fleet Safety: Inspect and Kit Up

Before heading into the winter, your crews should inspect work vehicles more frequently. Every work vehicle should have a winter emergency kit: An ice scraper, snow brush, shovel, flashlight with batteries, a blanket, snacks, and water.

Encourage Coffee Breaks: Put your staff’s welfare first

Even though your crews might be hardened to work in the rough winter conditions, encourage them to take regular breaks. Drinking fluids to stay hydrated as well as taking breaks in warm areas is important to make it through the cold.

By keeping morale high, you are more likely to get work completed safely and efficiently.
